Yes you read correctly, peanuts are not nuts.
Although, the word ‘nut’ is in their name, it is in fact a legume.

Peanuts actually grow underground, as opposed to nuts like pecans, macadamia, almonds, etc. that grow on trees hence also known as tree nuts. Legumes are a type of plant with seeds that grow inside pods such as peas and beans.

Peanuts are extremely cheap to grow compared to tree nuts and are often used in trail mixes to lower costs.
It only takes, on average, 120-150 days to plant and harvest peanuts. While most tree nuts take 3-10 years from planting till the first harvest and thereafter harvesting only once a year.

Interesting facts:
It takes 635 peanuts to make 400g of peanut butter.
By law, peanut butter must contain 90% peanuts.
Peanuts have more protein than tree nuts.
