Flaxseed linseed what they are not telling you ProperSnacks

Flaxseed (a.k.a. Linseed) truly is a miracle seed. Many studies have been done proving their health benefits on reducing cholesterol (here), body weight (here), blood pressure (here), and inflammation (here).

But what many marketers don’t tell you is that flaxseed needs to be ground to fully benefit from their health properties.

Flaxseeds contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, high levels of protein, dietary fiber, several B vitamins, and dietary minerals. However, these elements are all protected by the insoluble fibers of their outer shell. When one consumes the whole seed it will simply pass through your digestive system and the only benefit you will receive is the extra fiber (here).

But wait, before you rush out to buy ground flaxseed, you should know that whole flaxseed is chemically stable, but ground flaxseed may go rancid when left exposed to air at room temperature in as little as one week because of oxidation (here).

The ideal would be to purchase whole flaxseeds and use a coffee grinder (or these alternatives) to freshly grind the seeds and store the unused powder in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
